Dimming brightness did not work, i. e. progress bar moved via Fn keys...nothing else happened!
Thanks a lot for your suggestions!

Please open the Synaptic Package Manager and search for and install indicator-brightness and let me know how it works for you.

2016/02/20 Note: Brightness plugin no longer exists in Xfce 4.12. Add the Power Manager Plugin instead.

Please try using the native Xfce plugin. Right click on a panel and then go to Panel > Add New Items > Brightness plugin.

If that does not work, please open the Synaptic Package manager and search for and install xbacklight. Then hit F12 and try running the following line:

Code:
xbacklight -set 50

Does that produce a change?

Now please hit F12 on your keyboard and run

Code:
lspci -vnn

And post the output here.

After starting the Synaptic Package Manager a window popped up......E: The value 'socrates' is invalid for APT::Default-Release as such a release is not available in the sources
E: _cache->open() failed, please report.

Installing Xbacklight was not possible.

Run the Update Manager from the top-right panel. Then run Synaptic.

I bought a fast 64 GB flashdrive, installed US via Universal USB Installer, 4 GB permanence set. Settings and data are saved between sessions.
Brightness at max, terminal output:
03:00.1 System peripheral [0880]: Ricoh Co Ltd R5U2xx (R5U230 / R5U231 / R5U241) [Memory Stick Host Controller] [1180:e230]
Subsystem: Sony Corporation Device [104d:9066]
Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0, IRQ 10
Memory at 93000100 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=256]
Capabilities: <access denied>

03:00.4 SD Host controller [0805]: Ricoh Co Ltd MMC/SD Host Controller [1180:e822]
Subsystem: Sony Corporation Device [104d:9066]
Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0, IRQ 16
Memory at 93000000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=256]
Capabilities: <access denied>
Kernel driver in use: sdhci-pci

US is pretty stubborn, brightness not reducable.

Again, let's get xbacklight installed.

Hi F12 on your keyboard and run

sudo apt-get install xbacklight

It may already be installed, I cannot test that in 4.0 right now.

Then from terminal run

xbacklight -set 50

I checked the presence of Xbacklight in the Software Center-it was there. Nevertheless I installed it via terminal again. But US was not at all impressed and brightness is at max.

First off, this is not an UberStudent tissue, it is a Linux issue. All drivers--which is to say hardware support--in Linux are in the Linux kernel. You would have the exact same issue with any Linux distribution.

What is the exact make and model of your laptop? Would it be this one?
