hi there,
Am having strange problems with my system in total. Uberstudent has been running slower and slower for some time.
I have popovers showing up every time I go to log in here on this Board.
(I thought nearly impossible in Linux, but something obviously got me recently - don't even know of a virus checker/buster for Linux!??)

So, I tried a re-install but same problems and cannot get Guest Additions to install - Error message saying "not enough permissions".
Upgraded my user status to Admin without result.

I think they were auto-installed on my original install. I thought of doing a new install over the top of the old - but would probably lose all the layout changes etc.,

At this time - I'm not sure what action to take - especially in the light of the new "illegal" popovers. (I could expect that under Windoze, but here in Uberstudent!!!??)

Cheers,

I have not even a remote idea of what you might be talking about with popovers. Can you post a screenshot?

Hi Stephen,
Obviously you are no regular Windoze user!
I can't demo one at the moment - spent hours cleaning the system to find the trojan which was doing it. It finally worked, so they aren't happening now :D

There is a fierce great debate on the Net right now over these things and Firefox has become very active in trying to fight the ever-increasing violations of privacy by literally underhanded advertising "services" .
Good intro for all here:
http://www.ted.com/talks/gary_kovacs_tr ... ckers.html

These swines offer to incorporate a money-making scheme into legitimate programs - especially "free" ones which will infect the unsuspecting downloader and from then on, ads will appear in the users Browser by popping up on your screen as you attempt to visit almost any website. To get rid of the worst ones, you may have to click on up to 4 "want to leave here?" subsidiary popup messages.

One of the worst sources for these is a previously "safe" download source called download.com , part of the Cnet.com network which is an enthusiastic participant in this chicanery. Another very bad one is babel.com, a "free" translation service.

All of which is only really of interest to the poor souls still forced to use Windoze
SO:
On the original point of coming here:
After the cleanup, the Uber slow problem also went away. :D
AND there was no way to get the VBox Additions to install until after the cleanup.

Obviously it is all in the way the swines take "ownership" of your System settings.
All a bit of a worry as I believed that the VBox install stopped such things - much less in Linux!
I shall now endeavour to create a Microsoft-free machine as soon as I figure out how and port the programs I really need.

This error (below) may in fact be a sign for other benighted users that they are infected with a trojan.... !

Oh, I've told numerous people about Uberstudent and it appears many have problems FINDING the point to download the complete VBox/Uber system (which I think is the only way to go - sooo simple)

This error is not due to UberStudent. Also, guest additions is pre-installed in the VBox .ova files for UberStudent--there's no need to install guest additions manually when using them.

Update: Have you tried the VirtualBox Forums for this issue? I'm sure there are lots of Windows users there who can help with it pretty quickly. :geek:
