Hi Stephen,
First of all, thanks for a great distro ! I now have it installed on 2 laptops and my desktop PC.
I am not in education, but I still find the apps and shortcuts very useful.
It really is a well put together system. Well done !!!

The only thing that bugs me at the moment is the Applications menu.
As the title of this post says, quite often when I click 'Applications', it takes several seconds for the menu to appear - not always, but often enough to be annoying. This happens on all the installations.
I have only installed a few extra programs, such as gFTP, mtPaint, Teamviewer8 (not normally running).

Any ideas on what is causing the slowdown ?

Regards,

Phil

Two things you can try.

1. Click anywhere on the desktop before clicking on the menu.

2. Use less compositing: Applications > System > Look and Feel > Compositing > Start Least

Does either of these work?

Dang! I never thought of that....

No.1 makes no difference, but no.2 does seem to speed things up quite a bit.

Many thanks.

Now, how do I get US to startup 'Least' instead of default 'Medium' ? The next time I start US, it has reverted to 'Medium'.
The only way I can see is to copy the command out of xcompmgr-run.sh, and modify the desktop compositing setting in Session/Startup.

Phil

There's a couple of ways to do that.

Here's a global way:

Hit Alt+F2 on your keyboard and paste in the following line and hit Enter
Code:
gksu leafpad /usr/share/uberstudent/compositing/compton-run-startup.sh

Now, scroll down to the second to the last line of text and comment it out so it looks like this:
Code:
# compton --shadow-exclude "! name~=''" --config /usr/share/uberstudent/compositing/compton-default.conf -b &

(Note that all you are doing is adding a # to the beginning of the line)

Now, below the line you just commented out, paste in the following line exactly as shown:
Code:
nohup xcompmgr >script.out 2>&1 &

Save, and when you reboot (or log out and log back in) the minimal compositing will start.

I'll make all this a matter of unticking one box and ticking another in UberStudent 4.0. ;)

Thanks, Stephen.
That's just what I needed... :)

Your idea for US4 would be welcome.

It would be nice if the menu in 'System/Look and Feel/Compositing' could show which one was currently active, though I appreciate that this may be dificult to achieve.

Anyways, many thanks for your help, much appreciated.

Regards,

Phil
