Post subject:  [SOLVED]: Unable to get sound working on 2015 Dell XPS 13

Hello,

I recently installed UberStudent on my new Dell XPS 13 (2015 Edition). Everything works great, except I can't get any sound working. The onboard speakers do not work, headphones do not work, nothing. I checked to make sure everything was unmuted, and even tried uninstalling and reinstalling pulseaudio, but the sound still does not work and I no longer have the sound icon in the taskbar. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!
-Connor

On the keyboard hit F12 & a terminal opens. Type this code: pulseaudio -k hit enter. Then this code: pulseaudio -D then hit enter. Did this help? If not reboot and see if it works. If not then go to: Applications menu > System > Hardware > System Profiler and Benchmark > PCI Devices > Copy to Clipboard ... and then paste the result in your next post so you can get more help. Should the first option work then please post that you had success. Good luck. James

It's this machine, right? Or is it this one?

Did sound work on it before? If so, with which system? Windows? 8? Ubuntu?

In UberStudent, please go to Applications menu > Administration > system Profiler and Benchmark > Generate Report and then tick Devices and then attach the result here in your next post.

UPDATE:

See this and this.

Let's please try installing an earlier kernel version.

1. In the notification area (top-right panel) click the Update Manager icon to bring the program up.

2. Please first apply all updates from the Update Manager and reboot.

3. Open the Update Manager again and go to View > Linux kernels

4. Select the 3.13.0-24 (3.13.9) kernel and click the button for "Install the 3.13.0-24 kernel."

5. Once complete, turn off the system (don't just reboot, we need to do a cold start here) and turn it back on.

6. In the grub boot menu, select the "Previous kernels" section (or it may say "Advanced options") for UberStudent and from the sub-menu it brings up boot in to the 3.13.0-24 kernel.

Do you have sound now? Does the touchpad work acceptably?

Mr. Ewen,

I installed the earlier kernel, and the sound works great now! Thank you! However, the touchpad still freezes up periodically and sometimes certain keys repeat.

As I suspected. :geek:

Unfortunately, there is no fix for the touchpad at this time. This is a laptop that was only very recently released and the touchpad is non-standard hardware. As you can see by following the links in what I posted, the software vendors are themselves making diligent additions to the Linux kernel to support their hardware in this machine, but it takes some time for their patches to make their way in to Linux kernel releases. It is only a matter of time, so I suggest in the meantime that you simply connect any standard external USB mouse. ;)
