How do I get the sound on my Uberstudent laptop working again? The other day I noticed that the opening sound was not playing anymore so I tried to play some of my music in Audacious and it looked like it was playing but no sound was coming out. I also tryed playing music with earphones plugged in and that had the same results. I tryed utube which also had the same outcome. I booted into windows on the same device and everythng is working fine. Could this be a driver issue.

Thank you, an help would be greatly appreciated

That's really odd. Let's troubleshoot.

Did this happen immediately after an update from the Update Manager?

Did you needlessly update the Linux kernel by running sudo apt-get upgrade?

Those would indicate a possible software issue, which is very unlikely.

First off, please check the simple things. Is your sound muted? Please hit Alt+F2 on your keyboard and run xfce4-mixer. Is everything ticked to play there?

Which machine are you using?

I ran xfce4-mixer and my cpu is not muted and all the areas are filled. My compter is a HP PAVILION 15 NOTEBOOK.
Thank you for the fast reply.

I apologize it's taken me so long to get back with you. I've been very busy building UberStudent 4.1 and I can get pretty absorbed when I get in that mode. :| :geek:

Let's try updating the kernel, which is where drivers in Linux are located. Please open a terminal and run

sudo apt-get upgrade

Then, reboot. Did that fix the issue?

Sorry it took me so long to reply but I had a lot of assignments due in and I was very buissy. I updated the UberStudent kernel using sudo apt-get upgrade and restarted and the sound is still not working.
Thank you.

Let's take these troubleshooting steps to try to isolate the issue.

1. Go to Settings menu > Administration > Session and Startup > Application Autostart and verify that PulseAudio Sound System is ticked.

If it is NOT, please tick it and reboot. Do you have sound now? If it IS ticked, please:

2. In your system without sound, please create a new user account by going to Settings menu > Administration > Users and Groups > Add and create a new account; then, log out and log in to the new account. Do you have sound now?

If NOT, please:

3. Boot in to the UberStudent 4.0 live disc. Do you hear the startup sound that runs at boot? If you then play the sample sound file at this link, do you hear sound?

I created a new user account and the sound is working. :D The Pulse Audio box is ticked.
Thank you for all your help. :)

Cool, great. :D

Whenever a new account is created, it is made with all the default settings. The issue must have been some setting that got in to your old account's home directory, probably having gotten there from you having a bit too much fun tweaking things. We could maybe figure out what that setting is, but if you're content with a new account, great. :geek:

Thank you! How did you know that making a new account would make the sound work again. However I would like to keep my old account as it has many programs on it which would be difficult to transfer to the new account. Also I am likely to accidentally do this again.
