I know this might seem a trivial question to some, but is it possible to persuade Uberstudent to turn Num Lock ON automatically when it starts? I use the number pad virtually exclusively over the row at top of keyboard, and it is something I miss from my other OSes, not having to remember to turn Num Lock ON when I start

Sure.

Go to Settings > Hardware > Keyboard and make sure Restore num lock state on startup is ticked. If it is already ticked, untick it and then tick it again. Then exit the dialog. Then put your Num Lock key in the desired state and it should stay that way.

Does this solve the issue?

Not really, I do not appear to have a 'settings' option

Under the Applications menu I have System Tools and Preferences

System Tools does not have a settings or hardware option, the nearest option is the Uberstudent Control Center - that does have a Hardware option, but no keyboard option under hardware, the nearest is Input Devices. There is a Keyboard tab under that, but it only has options for Character Repeat Interval, Character Repeat Delay and Beep when there is an error of Keyboard input

Preferences does not have a settings or hardware option, it has options for Keyboard and Mouse (input device Preferences - same as above);
Keyboard and Mouse (Basic Keyboard and Mouse settings) under keyboard it has options for delay and interval;
Keyboard Input methods, this opens the IBus preferences dialogue, but still no obvious options for numlock

sorry if I am being dense, but did I look in the wrong place?

Oh, goodness, then you must be using the 2.0 Lightweight Edition. Ya gotta tell me these things or I'm going to assume you're using the latest edition.

Here's how to do it: http://askubuntu.com/questions/115877/h ... using-lxde

My appologies,

I have no idea what version I am using, it says UberStudent on the splash page, no indication of version.

Even the system Information has no indication of being version 2, maybe this is something that could be addressed for future releases?

Operating System
Version
Kernel Linux 3.2.0-35-generic (i686)
Compiled #55-Ubuntu SMP Wed Dec 5 17:45:18 UTC 2012
C Library Unknown
Default C Compiler GNU C Compiler version 4.6.3 (Ubuntu/Linaro 4.6.3-1ubuntu5)
Distribution Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS

Computer Name richard-UberStudent
User Name richard (Richard)

Desktop Environment LXDE (UberStudent-TwoPanel)

I managed to find the solution by installing numlockx from the link you sent

Thanks

Richard

You can know which version you are using because you will know which version you installed via the file name, in this case uberstudent-2.0-lxde-i386.iso

3.0 and above have a Welcome Screen that displays the version, e.g., http://uberstudent.com/screenshots/imag ... screen.png

The lightweight version is only for old and tired or very low specification computers. Is that what you need? If not, you really should update. The differences are enormous.

I installed it a couple of years ago from a Linux Format magazine cover DVD.

My system is not modern, but not exceptionally old, I attached hardinfo report.

Now is there a direct upgrade path within the system as I don't have a CD burner

Without an optical drive, the option for updating from 2.0 Lightweight to the 4.0 or 4.1 Full Edition--they are very different systems--is to install fresh from USB: http://uberstudent.com/wiki/index.php?t ... humb_Drive
