I have noticed that not all updates in the update manager get updated. I the Recommended updates section X.org window system and server are not checked to be updated and you can't check them. Also Google desktop Doc & drive are the same way. Is there a reason for this? If so is there a way they can be hidden? I just find them a bit distracting. Thanks Bill

Which version are you using? That's so I can try to reproduce the issue.

To remove Google Docs, it has to be done manually - it's just a shortcut. Hit Alt+F2 on your keyboard and type in the following:

Code:
gksu thunar /usr/share/applications

Scroll to Google Docs and just delete it.

Hi,

I do all my updates via the synaptic package manager (Lightweight Edition of UberStudent).
Check if you have the same settings as me because my system upgrades everything. To check: Open Synaptic Package Manager --> Settings --> Repositories. It should look something like in the file I added to the post.

I currently have 2.0.4.1 desktop Installed.

The only difference between yours and mine David is the last one for the Ubuntu version: Mine is set to "Long term support versions" where your is set to "For any new version"

Thanks Bill

Hm that should not make any difference for a routine software update. I think this only makes a difference for dist-upgrades whenever a new ubuntu version is out (strange btw, I did not get any notification the 12.10 is out :D )
Does the command
Code:
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade
allow you to update the x server?

Stephen I did like you suggested but Google desktop is still there.

David, I ran the apt-get command it ran just fine but when you bring up the update manager the same entries are still there for Xorg and google. Thanks Bill

Bill, I'm not really sure what you're seeing so it's hard for me to know how to advise.

One thing you can do is add Chrome Remote Desktop to Google Chrome and then follow the steps to share your computer with someone else and send me the access code via private message here or by Instant Message to stephen.ewen@gmail.com and we'll see what's going on and fix the issues. I'll be online from now until about 1:00am CST.

If you're not comfortable doing that, upload a screenshot of what you're seeing when you say that when you run update manager the same entries are still there for Xorg and google.

Stephen, here is a screen shot. My main concern if I'm getting this then someone else may as well and if they don't have any experience with Linux and or computers then they may panic and turn away from UberStudent, hence the story of in your blog about the student and Ubuntu.

You can not check the box next to each update. I ran into a similar issue when I was using Zorn and as I remember it there was a dependency issue with the update but I don't remember for sure.

Thanks Bill

So, your xorg upgraded correctly when you used the command line option (but it still shows the update that can't be checked in the update manager with the update manager saying there are no updates available) right?
Maybe uninstalling the update manager and then cleaning the package cache would solve this. I recommand doing this via the terminal and not with computer-janitor:
Code:
sudo apt-get clean && sudo apt-get autoclean && sudo apt-get autoremove && sudo apt-get update --fix-missing

Then reinstall the update manager.
What is the current xorg version please? Mine is the up to date 1:7.6+12ubuntu2 :geek:

David
