Now I seem to have overcome the mouse issue (see another forum topic), Uberstudent seems to be zipping along with even greater speed than before, thanks to the new 3.6.1 kernel.

But I continue to have one problem: I can neither install new items to the main menu (which says XFCE on it, by the way, even though I'm running the 32-bit MATE version) nor move items that have already been installed. I go through the standard "add item" process, but nothing happens when I click OK. What do you suggest?

Thanks for bringing this to my attention.

Lovely:

I'll check the fix already there and see if I can push it upstream tomorrow or by Monday and will post here again by then as well.

For an immediate fix do this:

Hit Alt+F2 on your keyboard and in the run prompt that opens paste in the following:

Code:
pluma ~/.config/menus/mate-applications.menu

In the text file that opens you will see the top 6 lines as follows:

Code:
<!DOCTYPE Menu
  PUBLIC '-//freedesktop//DTD Menu 1.0//EN'
  'http://standards.freedesktop.org/menu-spec/menu-1.0.dtd'>
<Menu>
   <Name>Xfce</Name>
   <MergeFile type="path">/etc/xdg/menus/uberstudent-applications.menu</MergeFile>

You are going to add the following to the file:
Code:
   <DefaultAppDirs/>
   <DefaultDirectoryDirs/>

Insert it so the result is as this:

Code:
<!DOCTYPE Menu
  PUBLIC '-//freedesktop//DTD Menu 1.0//EN'
  'http://standards.freedesktop.org/menu-spec/menu-1.0.dtd'>
<Menu>
   <Name>Xfce</Name>
   <MergeFile type="path">/etc/xdg/menus/uberstudent-applications.menu</MergeFile>
   <DefaultAppDirs/>
   <DefaultDirectoryDirs/>

Click save.

View and then try editing your menus.

Stephen,
Thanksfor the update. I too am having problems wiht editing the menus. When I tried what you said it said I have no file mate-applications.menu. So I backed out as I am too new to linux to create then solve problems. Should I mak this file and copy all what you wrote in your answer?

I downloaded your 2.10 Will it be easier to edit menus in it?
