I have studied Unity time ago and I woud like to see it in a menu to choose together with other desktop environments starting Uberstudent.
Would it it be possible?

As I'm sure you know, UberStudent is designed around the Xfce desktop. That said, anyone can install an endless number of desktop environments in to a single Linux distribution. However, the experience will not normally be particularly smooth in an additional desktop environment by simply adding it to one designed around another. Expect clutter, at the least. This is why the various *buntu flavors have separate editions based on desktop environment. Trust me: there's quite a bit to work out among different desktop environments to achieve a high quality, "out-of-the-box" user experience.

Anyone can install Unity in to UberStudent by running sudo apt-get install unity in a terminal. I've not tried that (recently) and don't know the result, but it will install Unity. As mentioned just above, however, don't expect a clean result without making often significant tweaks. There may be other issues, too--for example, Unity will probably want to replace the default MDM login manager in UberStudent.

I dislike Unity for multiple reasons. I do not consider it a desktop environment conducive to user productivity on a complex desktop workstation, such as UberStudent, especially when I keep new users in mind. Accordingly, I'm not particularly interested in creating an edition of UberStudent featuring Unity. I've already been down that road before and decided against it. That's why I went with Xfce as default in UberStudent.

I would definitely create an UberStudent MATE Edition, given sufficient demand. Also, I'd definitely consider a KDE Edition, given demand for one. Regrettably, Cinnamon is currently off the table, since it DOES NOT follow certain freedesktop.org standards in very important ways, and the developers know it but are not interested in making changes--I've asked them, several times, as have a thousand others upstream, and the developers have said "no." It's sad, really. :|

By design, Unity is not a particularly user-friendly desktop environment for a complex desktop workstation, such as UberStudent. It seems to me that Unity is primarily aimed at simple mobile devices and the monetary rewards possible thereby; its placement on a desktop computer is ultimately a secondary concern to Canonical, Ubuntu's parent company. Thus, currently, I have to reject Unity as an appropriate desktop environment for an additional UberStudent edition.

Thank you Stephen for your answer. I wanted to know your point of view on Unity.

Glad I could explain my viewpoint. :geek:
