Newer HP printers may not always be supported in Ubuntu or Uberstudent distros because they need later hplib versions than those that come pre-installed with the distro.
Installing the newest hplip version can be a bit of a handfull because of multiple "dependencies", that's other pieces of software that are required to be present for hplip to function. These dependencies appear to be known under different names in different distros, so that the command "sudo apt-get install" will not neccessarily find them when the hplip installer requests that they be installed.
Uberstudent does not currently appear in the list of supported distros on the hplip site, but a combination of Manual build and Ubuntu Automatic Installer worked for me.
First, install the dependency package from this site http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/in ... buntu.html by using
sudo apt-get install --assume-yes avahi-utils libcups2 cups libcups2-dev cups-bsd cups-client libcupsimage2-dev libdbus-1-dev build-essential ghostscript openssl libjpeg-dev libsnmp-dev libtool libusb-1.0.0-dev wget python-imaging policykit-1 policykit-1-gnome gtk2-engines-pixbuf python-qt4 python-qt4-dbus python-dbus python-gobject python-dev python-notify2 python python-reportlab libsane libsane-dev sane-utils xsane
Do NOT proceed to steps 3 etc after that.
Instead, go to http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/in ... index.html and follow the steps 1 to 14, pretending that your distro is Ubuntu 14.
Some extra hints for step 2 (for clueless newbies like me):
Copy and paste the hplip3-xx.xx.run file to the desktop. I'm certain it's possible to change the directory to anywhere, but I don't know how. And when you use the "cd Desktop" command, you must type cd Desktop (not cd desktop). Unless you write Desktop with a capital D, it does not work. Go figure.
You'll see some warnings:
warning: uberstudent distro is not found in AUTH_TYPES
note: Defaults for each question are maked with a '*'. Press <enter> to accept the default
error: Auto installation is not supported for 'unknown' distro so all dependencies may not be installed.
Please install manually as mentioned in 'http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/install/manual/index.html' web-site
Press 'y' to continue auto installation. Press 'n' to quit auto instalation(y=yes, n=no*):
Enter "Y" to continue.
Enter "c' for custom.
Enter "7" for Ubuntu and again "7" for Ubuntu 14.04 (worled for Uberstudent 4.0)
Enable all 5 options by entering "Y" 5 times (network, scanning, documentation, GUI, Fax)
Enter your password.
Enter "i" to remove the older hplip version before installing the new one.
Then the Build and Install process starts once you press ENTER.
Enter "Y" to check for hplip updates.
The rest will be self-explanatory and obvious if you have made it this far.
