Since installing UberStudent everything is working great except for one little detail - my fan is almost constantly running. I havent' been able to identify a pattern regarding when it starts. Sometimes it will shut off, but only for a moment before it starts again. More often than not, it just stays on. This also happened with Ubuntu 14.1 Any ideas?

Thanks for any help,
Andrew

Please open a terminal and run the following line:

Code:
nano /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/scaling_governor

Do you see the word ondemand at the top?

If not, add it by running this line in a terminal window:

Code:
sudo echo ondemand > /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/scaling_governor

Hi Stephen. Thank you for your speedy reply. I did see the word "ondemand" after running the line you provided.

What's the make and model of your machine?

Also, please hit F12 on your keyboard run the following lines:

Code:
sudo apt-get install inxi
inxi -v7 -c 0 > inxi-info.txt

Then, attach the file inxi-info.txt which will be in your home directory to your next post here.

Let's first please try updating your BIOS to version A06. The BIOS on your machine is outdated, version A00. You will need to do that inside Windows.

Do a cold restart. Did that fix the issue? If not, please continue.

Let's upgrade xorg for your graphics. Please hit F12 on your keyboard to call a terminal and run:

Code:
sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg-core

Do a cold restart. Did that fix the issue? If not, please continue.

Third, please visit the Intel Graphics Installer page. First, take the steps under the section Signatures - Ubuntu*, then download Graphics Installer 1.0.7 for Ubuntu* 14.04, 64-bit, and then run it to see if there is a newer driver; if so, please install it.

Do a cold restart. Did that fix the issue?

I think the second option may have worked. The fan seems to be running less, and shutting itself off, though still seems a bit excessive when compared to windows. Perhaps this is normally, considering UberStudent seems to run the battery down quicker?

However, now I have some funky glitches going on with my screen. Here's an example: Image

Notice the funky black space ?

That's called "tearing." It's a video driver issue.

First, make sure you have all data backups up-to-date and then take the third step to install the Intel drivers, as stated in my immediately prior post. Hopefully, that will fix the tearing.
