When I try to watch dvd movies with VLC or Totem media player, it does not work.

In VLC I always get this error message:

File reading failed:
VLC could not read the file (Input/output error).
File reading failed:
VLC could not read the file (Input/output error).
File reading failed:
VLC could not read the file (Input/output error).
File reading failed:
VLC could not read the file (Input/output error)
.

And in Totem media player it only plays the first few seconds of the movie before it stops.
My system is fully updated and I have installed the restricted extras on my device.

I would appreciate any advice you could give me on this topic.
Thank you. :)

The input/output error almost always means the DVD disc is the problem. What happens when you try a different one? DVDs are playing just fine on my end. :-D

In VLC, you can also try opening the disc by going to Media > Open Disc and under "Disc Selection" tick the box for "No disc menus."

Did you install the package uberstudent-meta-restricted-extras or ubuntu-restricted-extras?

If you installed ubuntu-restricted-extras, you also need to run the following from the terminal:

Code:
sudo /usr/share/doc/libdvdread4/install-css.sh

Alternately, just install uberstudent-meta-restricted-extras

I have a very similar problem with the DVD playback on a Thinkpad T410.
Have installed the Uberstudent meta-restricted extras but VLC player will still not play DVD video.
After clicking "Play", the DVD spins up and thre additional button appear on the VLC skin for a small fraction of a second, but no video or sound. The DVD stops spinning again and no error messages are being displayed.
Any idea what to try next?
Thanks!

What happens if you use Totem Media Player?

When I click "Open", Totem will display a window called "Select Movies or Playlists". This contains a list of files which are in the "Video" folder on the DVD, but Totem will only play the first file on the DVD called Video_TS.VOB .
That file shows some disclaimer about a copyright act, followed by the "ABC Video" logo and is including sound. Then it stops at the end of this clip.
When I click on any of the other files (VTS_01_0.VOB through to VTS_03_8.VOB) on the DVD, then no video or sound plays and an error message gets displayed: "An Error Occurred. The movie could not be read".

When I click "Open Location", Totem asks me to: "Enter the address of the file to open".
I then paste: " /media/p/AUSTRALIA_TIME_TRAVELLERS_GUID/ " into the address field and when I press ENTER, I get the same error message again: "An Error Occurred. The movie could not be read".

Thanks for any help with this!

If you try to play a considerably older encrypted DVD movie, does it work?

Thanks for the reply, much appreciated.

Exactly the same happens with "Gladiator" (Region 4) and "Koyaanisqatsi" (PAL, Region 2) and "Stargate" (PAL, Region 4).

"Tubular Swells" plays with VLC (yeah!) and also with Totem Media Player, but only if I manually select the .VOB files to play. It's marked as an "All regions DVD 5" .

"Die Geschichte vom kleinen Muck" plays in VLC player, it's old and is labeled "Region code PAL Zone 0".

"The Waltons" (Region 4) does not play.

"National Geographic African Paradise" (Pal/4) does not play.

But how can I tell if a DVD is encrypted, anyway?

This looks to me like it may be an issue related to DVD Regions settings. No disc for Region 4 seems to play, all discs for region 5, All regions or Region 0 seem to play.

Basically, any DVD you buy that is not made by a small entity will be encrypted.

What happens when you run the following in the terminal:

Code:
sudo /usr/share/doc/libdvdread4/install-css.sh

and then reboot?

What happens if you use VLC and open the movie without menus? (File > Open Disc > and tick No disc menus) ?
