I've recently installed US 3.0 and hope to use it for graduate and professional research/writing. Unfortunately, the video scrambles and the keyboard becomes unresponsive (precluding the use of CTL-ALT-Fn to log in another console to kill/start the GDM) on -some- attempts to view video content or load local HTML files. Per directions, a system profile report is attached. I hope someone can identify a cause and solution as UberStudent appears to be very beneficial and I would like to be able to make use of it.

Best regards,

On further (continually interrupted by the need to power down/reboot) examination, the problem also presents upon opening either Zotero or Firefox. The computer also houses a stable installation of Vector Linux, by the way, although I've not tried tracking down and installing Zotero or other applications from the UberStudent suite to test under that distro.

UberStudent does not use GDM. It uses MDM. So doing anything with GDM won't work. ;)

Let's first make sure you have all possible hardware drivers in the latest Linux kernel on your system, and install a broad range of multimedia codecs.

Please run the following, one line at a time, in a terminal (in UberStudent, you can just hit F12 on your keyboard to call a drop-down terminal):

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install uberstudent-meta-restricted-extras
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

Then, reboot in to the 3.8.0-27 kernel (it will probably just show as UberStudent 3.0 Xfce 64 in the grub boot menu).

Note that "dist-upgrade" does not mean "distribution upgrade." It's just a Debian way to force a higher (and sometimes riskier) level of updates, in this case, the Linux kernel and a variety of other packages. The update manager in UberStudent does not otherwise upgrade those by default. You should on your machine, though.

After doing these steps, does the issue persist?

If not, if you can attach a screenshot of what the scrambled video looks like, that would be helpful. I suspect, ultimately, that this may be an issue with the nouveau video driver for NVIDIA your system is using.

Also, do you know whether you are using the nouveau video driver for NVIDIA in your Slackware derivative, or the NVIDIA proprietary driver?
