Post subject:  Problem with extended desktop

Hi,

I have a dell latittude e5540 laptop which I had been running as a dual boot for a number of months no problems. I have re-installed and am since having troubles with running an external monitor as an extended desktop (this may or may not help).

If using the gui to set the monitor it flashes on for about a second and then resets with the check cable signal. If I use this command

xrandr --output DP1-3 --mode 800x600

The monitor stays on but is mirrored.

I have run driver manager am left with a grey screen which I presume means that it did not find any hardware which requires special drivers.

More possibly useless information is that when running refresh in update manager I get the following:

W: There is no public key available for the following key IDs:
1397BC53640DB551
W: There is no public key available for the following key IDs:
1397BC53640DB551
W: There is no public key available for the following key IDs:

Thanks!

Luke

Not at all sure why you're getting the key error but it can be fixed by simply running this line:
Code:
sudo apt-key adv --keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com --recv-keys 1397BC53640DB551 ; sudo apt-get update
As for your display issue, what happens when you take these steps described at stackexchange?

What happens if you add --left-of <laptop monitor> or --right-of <laptop monitor> to that command [as described on Debian.org]?

Sorry for the delay in replying, I've been away.

The key error is fixed and using " --left-of <laptop monitor> " works fine.

The problem appears to stem from the monitor that I had been using as when I connected to another monitor at Uni I did not experience the same problem.

Thanks for your help and an excellent distro!
