I don't know much about what gtk is other than that it got something to do with the look. But some "gtk themes" are different with gtk 2 and 3. so which one does uberstudent have? and can i change it somehow? and whats the difference?

The default A+ series of themes support both GTK 2 and GTK 3. To view screenshots of them, there are three images viewable at http://uberstudent.com/screenshots/

To change the theme go to Settings menu > Appearance > Style

To add new themes to the system you can explore http://xfce-look.org

To install a theme for all users extract the folder as root to /usr/share/themes

To install a theme for just yourself create a folder .themes at /home/yourusername/ and extract the theme folder into the .themes folder you made.

But do the os have one or the other or does it have both? I downloaded a gtk theme and it looked differently depending on if I had gtk 2 or 3 so i found out i had gtk 2. Is there any way to change the gtk version?

The system must have both, because some applications are based on GTK2 and others on GTK3. The libraries for both are pre-installed in UberStudent and neither should be removed.

Old themes will not have GTK3 support. In such a case, GTK3 applications will revert to a fallback theme causing often serious visual inconsistencies between the GTK2-only theme and GTK3 applications. Using a theme with both GTK2 and GTK3 support avoids the issue. All of the "A+" series themes in UberStudent have full GTK2 and GTK3 support.

You can get a really good idea of how themes work by simply poking around in /usr/share/themes

Basic background info about GTK is at http://www.linux.org/threads/understanding-gtk.6291/
