Hi Stephen,

I have been facing an issue with the software center for the past few days. Every time I try to open it, the window opens for a few seconds and then closes on its own.

I also tried downloading a .deb file directly from a website and tried installing it on my laptop, but I am getting the following message

"Software index is broken"

"This is a major failure of your software management system. Please check for broken packages with synaptic, check the file permissions and correctness of the file '/etc/apt/sources.list' and reload the software information with: 'sudo apt-get update' and 'sudo apt-get install -f'."

I tried to run synaptic package manager

E: Encountered a section with no Package: header
E: Problem with MergeList /var/lib/apt/lists/uberstudent.net_dists_trusty_main_i18n_Translation-en
E: The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.
E: _cache->open() failed, please report.

Not sure what I did to break all this stuff up though.

Cheers

Dinesh

This can sometimes happen in Debian/Ubuntu-based systems during a long network interruption while apt is running. For the next update of the package uberstudent-xfce-default-settings-enduser I'm investigating put in a smart preemptive fix that runs at boot time, so that people only need to reboot (which most people will just naturally try to do anyway) to fix this issue, if it exists.

Here's the fix:

Making sure you are first connected to the Internet, please hit F12 on your keyboard to call a terminal window and run this line:

Code:
sudo rm /var/lib/apt/lists/* -vf && sudo apt-get update

Done. Your software programs should now work again. :geek:

Your welcome. :D

Look for a new tiny program in the next few days, Software System Fixer, that automatically installs during normal updates from the Update Manager. It will place in to your Applications menu at System > Software. By simply running it, users can fix this and other of the most common issues that might break apt.
