Hi Stephen an Damion,
THanks for the new version!
Just to be clear and avoid previous disaster:
Can I download an ISO and install directly over my existing version?

Cheers!
Jack

Hi Jack. Yes, you can install 4.0 directly in to the partition currently devoted to 3.0. Just make sure you first get out any files, bookmarks, etc., that you want because everything will be overwritten. You can then copy your files over as appropriate in to your new installation.

Hi Stephen,
Thanks for the quick but bad news reply :-)
Having had soooo much trouble the last time (When I lost literally years of the "next door" Windows files), I think I’ll stay with the old version.
I have never been able to successfully back up and restore in Linux previously.

A lot of angst involved here, as medically I'm already tightrope-walking for years ( I've had 2 out of 3 "allowed" strokes before you are out or paralysed) and it really was frustrated PC rage caused by memory failure caused the last two! :?

I've already had enough problems unsuccessfully just getting the UberStudent updates to work and even updating individual files. Never could get the Windows exe files to work in Linux and just gave up.

I'm beginning to know how those terrified business Windows XP users stuck for all these years feel......... :roll:

I was hoping that the expected upgrade might be my way out, but I'll post about the other problems separately and mebbe try again.

Cheers!

Jack

Hi,

is there a way to upgrade a running 3.0 like in other ubuntu distros,
with stetting new repos an doing an apt-get dist-upgrade?
If so, what are the sources to set in /etc/apt/sources.list.d/official-package-repositories.list ?

Best regards,
Bernd

To update from UberStudent 3.0 to 4.0 without reinstalling from the ISO, you can take the following steps. Before proceeding, please note the following caveats regarding this method of updating:

1. It is ENTIRELY UNSUPPORTED. If you choose to version update with this method and run in to issues, my only response will be "please update using the ISO."
2. It TAKES MUCH MORE TIME--like four or five times longer--than simply backing up your files and re-installing with the ISO.
3. Results will vary. Expect that your system will be LESS STABLE than installing 4.0 from the ISO.
4. You CANNOT REVERT to 3.0.
5. The result is not exactly UberStudent 4.0. Leftovers from 3.0 will remain.
6. You still have to MAKE BACK UPS of some files
7. It is NOT EASIER TO DO, as you can see below

If after all that, you still wish to version update without an ISO, here are the steps to take:

1. Open a terminal. You will need it throughout.

2. Run the following lines in the terminal

Code:
cd $HOME/Desktop && mkdir 4.0-keyrings && cd $HOME/Desktop/4.0-keyrings

Code:
wget ./ http://www.uberstudent.net/pool/main/o/oracle-vbox-keyring/oracle-vbox-keyring_2010.05.18_all.deb && wget ./ http://www.uberstudent.net/pool/main/s/skype-keyring/skype-keyring_2013.05.19_all.deb && wget ./ http://www.uberstudent.net/pool/main/s/spotify-keyring/spotify-keyring_2012.06.25_all.deb && wget ./ http://www.uberstudent.net/pool/main/s/steam-keyring/steam-keyring_2013.05.09_all.deb && wget ./ http://www.uberstudent.net/pool/main/v/videolan-keyring/videolan-keyring_2013.08.27_all.deb

Code:
sudo dpkg -i oracle-vbox-keyring*.deb && sudo dpkg -i skype-keyring*.deb && sudo dpkg -i spotify-keyring*.deb && sudo dpkg -i steam-keyring*.deb && sudo dpkg -i videolan-keyring*.deb

Code:
rm -rf $HOME/Desktop/4.0-keyrings

Code:
sudo apt-get purge uberstudent-grub2-theme presentation-stopwatch

3. Hit Alt+F2 on your keyboard and run the following:

Code:
gksu thunar /etc/apt/sources.list.d/

Now open the file official-package-repositories.list in a text editor, hit Ctrl+A to select all the text and then hit the Delete key on your keyboard. Now copy the below text and paste it in to the file and save it.

Code:
# UberStudent Repositories
deb http://uberstudent.net socrates main non-free contrib #uberstudent_main
deb http://uberstudent.net trusty main non-free contrib #unchanged_trusty_pkgs_in_uberstudent_repo

4. Now run the following in the terminal:

Code:
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get -y dist-upgrade

It will take A LONG TIME to run. You MUST watch the terminal text as it runs, the entire time. You MUST answer Y for "Yes" to all questions it asks. Also, you MUST answer OK for anything it asks. Use the arrow keys on your keyboard to make the selection or type in your response, as needed.

Now run this line again:

Code:
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get -y dist-upgrade

5. Now run the following lines in the terminal:

Code:
sudo update-grub && sudo update-initramfs -u

6. Now run the below lines. PLEASE NOTE: Running the below will return Chromium, Firefox, and Zotero to their stock states. This is required so they run together with the new versions. Make any backups of bookmarks and Zotero databases before you proceed!

Code:
rm -rf .config/chromium && rm -rf .config/libreoffice && rm -rf .config/Thunar && rm -rf .config/xfce4 && rm -rf .gconf && rm -rf .local && rm -rf .mozilla && rm -rf .zotero

Code:
sudo cp -rf /etc/skel/.[a-zA-Z0-9]* $HOME

7. Finally, run this line and then turn your machine back on:

Code:
sudo shutdown -h now

Yes, that's exactly the point. :shock: :mrgreen:

The fast and easy way to upgrade is to just back up your important files and re-install from disc.
