Ok, I am being selfish, but there are millions out there like me.... ;)
I'm about to go dangerous again and set up my own sub-server out there.
I'd like to go with one of the Cloud Networks like Cloudflare or DigitalOcean who offer what looks like very low price starter packages with easy upgrade paths.

The catch is - you are on your own. Bare metal sorta thing.
I'd like to put an operating system on (they all offer many choices if pushed) like Kloxo etc., UberStudent?? and have UberStudent run the thing with WordPress.org and a good Forum on it, PhBB or similar.

The providers do seem amenable to including additional operating systems.....

Any and all advice more than welcome....

Cheers from Downunder (in more ways than one...)

uberstudent.net, the UberStudent repository, runs flawlessly on Debian Stable with an added repository for installing certain more up-to-date packages. I set it up myself using SSH and a server shell hosted by the perfectly reliable linode.com, which donations to UberStudent pays for. There is LOTS of documentation out there for setting up a server with Debian. It's pretty straightforward if you're comfortable doing everything with command line. It's been running without hitch or a need for a reboot for over 6 months.

uberstudent.com and uberstudent.org (and thus this forum) runs on Ubuntu server. It's flawlessly maintained by the host, provide.net, who has kindly donated their perfectly reliable service to UberStudent.

UberStudent went through some awful, organizationally damaging experiences, with bad hosts before arriving at the above two.

UberStudent as a distro is not designed to be used as a typical server. It will work because it is both Debian and Ubuntu, but using it as a sever is just superfluous.

Personally, I recommend Debian Stable for a server you are setting up yourself, because the available documentation seems to be the most abundant, clear, and up-to-date for a variety of server applications. That's ultimately why I chose it for something I needed to set up myself. ;)

Thanks again, Stephen.
I've had some interesting feedback from people on my lists about this move and interestingly, some quite technical, have advised staying with Shared Hosting especially for the use of CPanel/WHM being *quite safe* and easy to use these days with greatly improved safety since the "old days".

A key advice has been to rent a separate I.P. to help stay out of the common en masse banning of shared IP addresses, with multiple benefits for a $ or 2 p.m.. Makes sense. (Been caught up in a ban innocently before - takes some undoing. :x )

Might be a saver for me, after all.
