Post subject:  Docfetcher CPU 100% Fan Running on High

My configuration before explanation:

hp Pavilion dv7-4280us Entertainment PC laptop
Processor: 4x Intel(R) Core(TM) i5 CPU M 480 @ 2.67GHz
Memory: 5997MB

After installing/booting into uberstudent-2.10-1-desktop-i386.iso my CPU fan was constantly running on high. I researched the subject quite a bit coming up with various solutions but yielding no results. My first thought was, “it has to be my discrete ATI Radeon Graphics card,” I thought of vgaswitcheroo and then ran this command as root:
cat /sys/kernel/debug/vgaswitcheroo/switch

0:DIS: :Off:0000:01:00.0

The result above shows that my discrete (DIS) graphics card is indeed off, so this was not the problem.
I then decided to check Uberstudents pre-installed system process monitor application, htop. You can find it by going to Application->System->System Administration->Htop. Htop will open a new xfce4-terminal with its output. Within its output I saw that one of my CPUs was running steady at 100%. No wonder my laptop fan was running on high!!! With htop, I was able to find the program responsible, docfetcher. I killed docfetcher's process and my fan returned to normal speed. To test if it was truly docfetcher, more specifically docfetcher-daemon-linux, I restarted my computer. After reboot my laptop fan started to run on high. I started htop and saw the same thing as before. I then killed the docfetcher-daemon-linux process and for the solution removed it all together with the below command:
sudo apt-get --purge remove docfetcher

restarted and everything is working “quietly.” Okay, so I hope this helps someone.

The issue is believed fixed for UberStudent 3.0. The DocFetcher developer was very helpful in adding a few fixes to DocFetcher, which ARE NOT YET available from the DocFetcher sourceforge page, but ARE in the debian package I made for the latest release of DocFetcher, which is in the UberStudent 3.0 repo. You can install it from the deb package now, and do let me know how it goes. :geek:

thank you very much for this hint. I experienced the same problem with my Toshiba L300D. The fan made me crazy.

I did the same to stop docfetcher but I did it the GUI way: System --> Settings/System --> Session and Startup --> Application Autostart --> unchecked box for docfetcher.

Perhaps this way helps someone who is a newbie to Linux and not familiar with terminals and codes like me.

Thank You!
