Title says it all.
After the login screen I get a mouse cursor and a black screen. Trying diff sessions has no effect.
Ubuntu Studio can't find it's OS files on boot.
GRUB 'seems' to be ok?!?

That method of upgrading, Ubuntu's "answer" to Debian's rolling releases, is riddled with problems - always has been and always will be, and for so many reasons. I never recommend it on even straight Ubuntu systems, far less so on anything upstream. You're literally begging for trouble.
I dislike that it's even an option, frankly, due to the risk of losing important data without warning.
No one anywhere in the stream is devoted to testing things so they do not break by this method of "upgrading." It would be a herculean task to do so, which is why no one does, and which is why things routinely break by the upgrade method.
If you choose to do it anyway, the best support I can offer is a large red-flag warning: don't do it, and that if you choose to anyway, do so only for experimental reasons and at your own risk.
The best, safest, and ultimately easiest and overall least time-consuming way to upgrade is to back up your data and install the new system. This is even the way Mint has its users do it.
UberStudent 3.0 is weeks away. You can browse the testing repository for 3.0 right now if you like.
You might try burning Linux Secure Remix to a disc, booting in to it, and running the program Boot Repair from it to perhaps recover your current systems.
