Post subject:  A brief introduction

Hi, my name is Luigi and I'm actually a relatively new user of Linux, but I'm very happy and excited to have come across this distribution. What I'd really like to do is use it as an alternative to Microsoft and Apple's OS's. I guess that I'm kind of a control freak but I don't really feel like I'm in control when I'm using either one of them. :(

That was a big part of why I migrated to Linux. My control of my own computer under Windows was dictated by Microsoft, but my control of my own computer under Linux is limited by only my own knowledge (and the knowledge of my peers); within Linux, knowledge translates unhindered to control.

If you want to really sample the control that is possible within Linux, learn to write some code. The Python language is already installed in most Linux distros due to its usefulness, including UberStudent. (Simply hit the F12 key to bring down the Guake terminal and type python and you are in the Python interpreter.) For an editor for writing Python code, UberStudent already has the Geany IDE installed under Applications > Education > Subjects > Computer Science. Python was designed specifically to make writing code easy; a testament to the success of its design is that its ease of use has been immortalized in an XKCD comic. To start learning Python, try the Python lessons at CodeCademy.com. If you get enough Python knowledge under your belt, I suspect that you Luigi would find the control it gives you addictively empowering.

If I was in charge of a high school, I would at a minimum make a Python course a mandatory part of acquiring a diploma for all students. (...And of course I would utilize UberStudent to do so.)

Yeah! I'd really like to know how to use the terminal to update and install the apps and stuff. I'm kind of picky so I'd like to be able to keep everything as up to date as possible.

That can get tricky sometimes. For example, in order to update the foreign binary blob which is Adobe Flash Player against its recent CVE-2014-0515 vulnerability, there is a series of commands to execute...
