Hi!

I am planning on buying a laptop and i want Uberstudent to work on it. I have looked around and i have learned that my knowledge in computers cant help me. I´m hoping that someone in this forum could help me.

I want the laptop...
...to run Uberstudent without any problems and preferably next to windows 7.
...to be small enough to bring to school every day (11' or less i think)
...to have enough battery to bring to school every day (around 5h battery time)
...to have these system requirements: http://www.game-debate.com/games/index. ... 2&game=Hex AND
http://www.game-debate.com/games/index. ... gon%20Nest
...to cost less than around $300.

the games are the reasons that i want windows 7, but i have another laptop that i might keep if and play the games on with windows 7 if the laptop i just described is impossible and doesn't exist.

I really hope that someone here can help me. Either by giving suggestions directly or directing me to the "right" place to ask this question.

(i probably could have chosen another forum to post this on but i assumed that alot of people don't know the Uberstudent requirements anywhere else but here)

Thanks! that site taught me more than 2 weeks of google and wikipedia have!

So now I'm down to three alternatives of specs (all of them chromebooks)

1)
Processor: 1.4 GHz Intel Celeron 2995U
Memory: 4096 MB DDR3 SDRAM
Storage: 16 solid-state drive (SSD)

2)
Processor: 2.16 GHz Intel Bay Trail N2830
Memory: 2048 MB DDR3
Storage: 16 solid-state drive (SSD)

3)
Processor: 1.7 GHz Intel Core i3-4005U
Memory: 2048 MB DDR3L SDRAM
Storage: 32 solid-state drive (SSD)

I don't know how good processor and memory Uberstudent needs if im going to use it for general universety stuff(word processing, math calculations, emails, surfing...).

I have looked around and some people say that 2Gb RAM is too little(which is why 1) is an alternative) and some people say it is enough. Some people also say that 2 GHz CPU is absolute minimum and others say its not.
Also, I realize that 16 Gb storage is very little, but im thinking that i can buy a 32Gb SD card and it will all work out, right?

Anyway, help with this choice would be helpful!

I am sure Stephen and others will check in to help you. I am sure you read the release notes: http://sourceforge.net/projects/uberstu ... /Socrates/ Scroll down to "System Requirements" and you will note: SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS

* 64-bit or 32-bit PC or Intel-based Mac with at least 1 GB of
memory. 2 GB of memory or more is strongly recommended.

My daughter had never used linux and I gave her a used Dell Latitude D630 with a Core 2 Duo 1.80 GHz with 2 GB RAM with UberStudent installed and she used this her first semester at community college. I added another 2 GB RAM for second semester but she never said whether it made a difference although it was 32 bit. She never used windows just UberStudent as she did not have your gaming requirements.

I know there are people who run UberStudent and install Windows using VirtualBox so yes you would want 2 GB for UberStudent plus more RAM for your windows in VirtualBox. Here is a quote from Stephen:

"If you want a dual-boot machine, you have to install Windows first and then Linux; or, just install your Linux distro and then use it as a host machine to run Windows in VirtualBox. If you choose the latter, I recommend a higher-end video card (256MB to 512MB memory) and 8GB of RAM memory or more on your host machine and allocating 1/4 of the memories to running Windows in VirtualBox." .

You can read the who message here: viewtopic.php?f=4&t=622&p=1862&hilit=&sid=3eeb30e15215a6ae5a7c9df255119438#p1862 . Just read the different responses to the question and you will find Stephen's response which contains this quote. Good Luck. James

Martin please be sure to start reading at the top of the page. It seems the link I sent opens past the point where Stephen's quote is located. Try this: http://uberstudent.org/phpBB/viewtopic. ... b9c61799b8 or just be sure to start at the top of the page. Take care!
