Post subject:  Password problems

Hi

I'm very new to all this, havent really touched a computer beyond typing an assignment or surfing the net so i dont have much savvy.... yet.

I'm having issues with my password.

I can log in initially when I turn the computer on. However if I need to re-enter a password at any other time I get a failed message. When I tried to Change my password I got the message that read something along the lines of "remote application didn't send or message bus security blocked reply or reply timed out."

Do you have any ideas? Also if my screen times out I can't log back in with my password. And finally I can't get access to the root control due to the same problem. Not that I'm wanting to mess with that yet, but it would be nice to have the option to once have got my head around Command Line.

Thanks for you help...

Cheers Nik

Sounds like you've been running commands you were not sure about and really broke something. I'd not be able to tell what. I've never encountered such a thing but apparently this person has.

I'd suggest you have two installations of UberStudent, one you use for productivity and another that you use to experiment with to your heart's content, realizing you may mess something up from time-to-time have have to re-install.

Hi Stephen

Thanks for the reply.

I havent acessed the root menu. I cant access anything, except the initial login. I tried to put adobe on so my daughter could start with scratch, and i cant because i need a password.

You mention: "Sounds like you've been running commands you were not sure about and really broke something"

All I did was follow the prompts on the disk that came with the magazine. I dont see how I could have two versions on my machine and wouldn't know where to start to fix it.
I've read the link you sent and I haven't tried to do anything like what this fellow tried, I'm well aware of my skill level (which is none), the only thing similar is the message. I'll have a look at 'sudu' but I don't see what this fellow is saying needs to be done to fix the problem, It looks to be more a discussion of the pros and cons of sudu??

You say you've never come across this before. So what are my options? I would like to continue with Uberstudent as I'm going back to Uni for a second degree and would like to use your system. However if I can't access even the most rudimentary parts of the system eg. adding a adobe plugin, I'll have to go back to windows :(

That being said can you tell me how to fix this or could you tell me how to get it off my system so I could either try insatlling again?? Or just stick with Windows??

Sorry to be a pain but as you can imagine this frustrating at my end too! :)

Ps. Is there a help number I could call? I hate communicating this way, its clunky and slow. What could get sorted in 10min takes days! And unfortunatley its easy for misunderstanding to happen!

Anyway,

Thanks Stephen

Looking forward to hearing back from you, or anyone else out there who can help.

Cheers Nik

Ah! That's a really important piece of info.

Are you using UberStudent 2.0 Lightweight or from the disc included with the October 2014 edition of Linux Format Magazine?

Sorry about the wait i've been here all along (trying my 1st steps at codeacademy Python) still getting used to how this posting forum thing works :)

No. The disk came from the Linux Format Magazine September 2015 issue. Uberstudent 4.1 new 64bit release.

Does that help?

Hi Nik , sorry to here your troubles. Just a suggestion ,go to Http://sourceforge.net/projects/uberstu ... s/epicurus and download a new copy .if your working with an older machine you may need the 32 bit version. After you burn your new iso image,(or put it on a usb) reinstall it. Good luck. Rich

You should definitely download the ISO afresh and make your own disc.

Like I said, the problems you're describing just don't make much sense. Let's start with a fresh installation from the actual ISO from sourceforge.

Hi

I'm afraid youre going to have to spell things out like you were talking to a 3 year old. I'm assuming an ISO is the Uberstudent 4.1 that came on the disk, and you want me to download a new version from the website instead, burn it onto a fresh disk and then use this to bring it onto my computer?

I have never burnt a disk before so not sure of how to do that, but i'll try.

Before I start though, is this what you are suggesting i do?

Also, can I write over the Uberstudent already on my computer with the one you're suggesting I download from the net and burn onto a disk, or do I need to take it off the computer first???

Ta, Nik

Here ya go: http://uberstudent.com/wiki/index.php?t ... s%27_Guide

Make sure you use the 64-bit if your machine is 64-bit.

Let me know if you have any questions.

The answer to both of your questions is yes. First things first. What computer are you going to install Uberstudent on? Make and model number. Then we can decide which version you need to download.
